Brian Culbertson
Long Night Out
By Ralph Burnett Mesa/Bluemoon has been a label with consistently strong debut signings and has introduced a recent batch that all show the promise of solid careers. Twenty-year-old musical wizkid Brian Culbertson wrote all the tracks and provided keyboards, bass, trombone, vocals and drum programming on his compelling contemporary instrumental debut, Long Night Out. By the time Brian had graduated form high school, he had racked up a slew of Downbeat Awards (six individual and five more with his high school band) and clearly made it beyond the basement walls of his parents house. Much of Brian's early musical inspiration came from his father, an award-winning high school jazz band director, who saw to it that Brian began classical piano studies at age eight. At age twelve, Brian started composing and dreamed of someday scoring films. "Most of my inspiration starts with an internal rhythm," explains Brian, "and after that it's just a series of images, like a movie, going through my head." |
